Eat that Elephant
Have you ever worked for an organisation that doesn’t address the tough stuff. Well, that is the reason for our signature course Eat that Elephant.
What does it mean to Eat that Elephant?
And what do Elephants have to do with HR, culture and organisational performance and conduct?
The main cause of cultural dysfunction is the inability for people in organisations to have the difficult conversations with each other, with subordinate staff and managers. This difficulty leads to enormous problems, not only culturally, but also in respect of performance and conduct management, misconduct, productivity, employment engagement, respect and civility issues, bullying and harassment, turnover rates, management/employee interactions and teamwork.
Getting it right will see improvement in trust and values, effective conflict, commitment, accountability and ultimately, results.
But what about the Elephant?
Think of a baby Elephant. Its small, somewhat cute and doesn’t cause any real dramas. It’s manageable and can be trained. Baby elephants aren’t a problem.
Now think about a big, smelly, stubborn, angry elephant.
Think about the Elephant in the room (that’s no one wants to address). It can’t be moved, has settled in, can’t be changed and causes all sorts of problems and issues. It’s the problem in your organisation. Sometimes, the bog elephant becomes normalised.
How did it get there? How did this problem become so big?
It came in as a small Elephant, when no one dealt with it. No one pulled it up on its behaviour, conduct or performance., No one had the necessary conversations and changed its behaviour. Now it can’t be moved.
Eat that Elephant was created to address the fundamental communication failures that lead to an organisation’s people management challenge. The course centres around having difficult conversations, providing strategies and frameworks to address the Elephant in the room. You’ll learn:
- How to identify behaviours in the workplace, including your own
- Performance v conduct management
- Identifying psychosocial hazards
- The essential communications skills you need (yes, you’ll all learn how to have a conversation)
- And you’ll get to practice it all in the context of your own work environment.
